DO TEXTURED WALLPAPER AND REFINISHED FURNITURE WORK TOEGTHER? DEFINITELY, THEY DO!

Paintable textured wallpaper can be another great way of adding a uniqueness to the pieces you want to refinish. There are tons of various designs to choose from. What makes it even better is that textured wall paper offers you an easier way of adding 3D patters which otherwise would have to be created with raised stencils.

It can be used on the fronts of drawers, sides of the cabinets, fronts... so pretty much whenever you want.

Here is an example of Brewster Plouf Damask Paintable Wallpaper which I used to decorate the fronts of the drawers.

How to apply the paintable textured wallpaper?

You have to cut the piece with dimensions corresponding to the area you want to cover. If your wallpaper has an incorporated glue, it is sufficient to just wet it generously (I was dipping it into a basinet filled with water), place the piece in the desired area applying pressure (moving with your hands though the whole piece) in order to eliminate any air pockets. Otherwise apply a thin layer of glue and place it using the same pressure / smoothing motion to remove any air pockets. Once well attached (pay a special attention to the edges) and dry, I sprayed the wallpaper with some shellac. It makes painting easier and prevents wallpaper form absorbing paint like a sponge. Maybe it is not a necessary step - but I do it.

Next step: painting. Use the brush which allows you reach all the "deeper" parts of the design. To make sure there are no white dots apply 2 coats minimum (if using darker colors you may need to apply 3). And do not forget to seal it with a varnish once dry!

Another great thing about the textured wallpaper is that not only it can be painted but additionally it is a great base for dry brushing. You can use color contrasting with the color of your background to make the details of the pattern more visible. In this case, seal the paint once you are done with your second color (dry brushed). Or you can seal your painted wallpaper and use wax to accentuate the patter.

In the example below, I used a metallic paint to add extra glow and make the details more visible.
